Singapore is big on bullion, and as well as the scores of investors getting involved with gold and silver bars, doing their best to get big deals as close to spot price as possible, there are also a growing number of collectors who seek something a little different. Proof coins, rare coins and flawed coins have been intriguing collectors for hundreds of years, and these days they are known as Numismatists.
With so many of these in Singapore, and with more getting involved every year, just where can the Singapore coin enthusiast turn to find likeminded people and to indulge in their hobby?
Singapore International Coin Fair
In 2014, the annual Singapore International Coin Fair hosted some of the world’s most innovative and sought-after Mints, including the Austrian Mint, the Scottsdale Mint, the New Zealand Mint and the Swiss Bullion Corporation. This is the home of bullion coins and collectible coins in Singapore, and as well as a number of top Mints, there are also many exhibitions that are sure to excite Numismatists across the East.
If you get in early enough, then book yourself a ticket to the Singapore International Coin Fair. You can read more about getting to the event, along with everything that will be showcased, on the event’s official page.
Senior Numismatists of Singapore
This group of coin collectors is strictly for the more mature man and woman. This is a great way to spend an evening, and if you love coins and you meet the age requirements then you will be welcomed with open arms. This group meets at the Funan Stamp & Coin Agency every Wednesday. Here they discuss coins, trading pictures and information, and around the same time everyday they all go to the same restaurant and enjoy a drink and a bite to eat. If you want to join in then head for this location at 10:30am on Wednesday, or learn more about the group online first, and introduce yourself to the groups’ leaders via email or telephone just to ensure that you are welcome and that they still have a meeting planned for that week.
There are many small-time and big-time coin dealers in Singapore, with some bargains and some rare coins just waiting to be uncovered. One of the best ways to pickup some great coins is to get out there and to search around, digging up treasure in coins shops like an antique dealer at a garage sale.
Some places worth checking out include China Jia Long Coin & Antiques, located in the Golden Mile Tower, Clifford Numismatic & Collectible Coins on North Bridge Road, and Far East Stamp & Coin Center, which is also on North Bridge Road.
Meeting up with likeminded enthusiasts is a great way to spend an afternoon, and you can also catch up on the latest news, trends and more. If you head to coincollecting.meetup.com then you can seek International groups of coin collectibles, all of which meet-up both online and offline.
Another way to ensure you stay up to date with the latest happenings in the coin collecting world is to hit the social media networks, such as FaceBook. There are many groups in Singapore that discuss coin collecting online, and you can even trade pictures of your favourite coins. There are also people who trade actual coins, but you should always be wary of doing such a thing in an insecure environment such as FaceBook.
